Doha’s tourism industry is growing year after year; it is also home to countless expatriates from all over the world and is considered a very modern city – however, it is also the capital of an Islamic country with customs and traditions that are different from those of most Western countries. Therefore, there are a few things you should know before you visit.<\/p>\n

#1: Drinking alcohol
\nYou can buy and drink alcohol in Doha, as long as you are in a licensed restaurant, bar or hotel, or bring a bottle of alcohol from a supermarket to your accommodation. However, you may not drink alcohol (or even get drunk) in public: this is considered a crime and will be punished.<\/p>\n

#2: Dress Code
\nAs an Islamic country, there are a number of things to consider in terms of dress code. There is no such dress code for visitors to Qatar, but out of respect for the culture, it is recommended to dress conservatively. You may also be banned from certain landmarks if your clothing is deemed inappropriate.<\/p>\n

First, knees and shoulders should always be covered in public. This means that men or women should not wear tank tops or shorts. Women should also avoid wearing translucent and light clothing, and may have to cover their heads when entering a mosque.<\/p>\n

#3: Public displays of affection
\nPublic displays of affection should be avoided in Doha or you could get into trouble! Even if you are traveling with your partner or husband\/wife, kissing in public is a serious offense, and while you can get away with holding hands in Doha, in some parts of Qatar this very innocent act is frowned upon.<\/p>\n

Souq Waqif is one of Doha’s most iconic attractions. Formerly a traditional market for exchanging livestock and spices, today it boasts a vast array of stalls and stores selling everything from souvenirs to household items, food and textiles.<\/p>\n

This very busy souk also gives you the opportunity to get up close to falcons, as well as interact with Arabian horses and camels in the stables, learn about Qatari art and sample local cuisine.<\/p>\n

The southern part of Doha is the largest desert in Qatar, where you can enjoy activities such as sand surfing, camel riding, hookah smoking and sandboarding at desert camps. So a desert safari from Doha is almost a must in this city!<\/p>\n
