You haven’t been to Athens without visiting the Acropolis, although you can easily spot it from almost anywhere in the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic sites of Western civilization, the Acropolis is not just a building, but a temple citadel built on a large rocky outcrop.<\/p>\n

Most famous for the Parthenon’s gleaming white marble columns , the foothills also offer some interesting attractions, such as the Theatre of Dionysus and the Theatre of Herod Atticus – the latter a fully functioning stone theater that hosts performances from March to October.<\/p>\n

*Pro tip: Climb Filopappou Hill during prime time for the best views of the Acropolis.<\/p>\n

View from the ruins of the Byzantine church in OiaYes, it has become a great place to visit, but everyone comes here for a good reason anyway – to catch the famous postcard-perfect sunsets in Oia. Accommodation in the area is usually quite expensive, but you can experience the view from the top of the ancient Byzantine church ruins for free. We saw some pretty spectacular sunsets on our trip, but I’d have to say this was one of my favorites. Don’t miss the sunset even if most of the crowds start to disperse to watch the town light up as the sky gets darker.<\/p>\n

For something a little quieter, Imerovigli’s Skaros Rock is a close second. The higher you climb, the fewer people you’ll find, as it takes some effort to reach the top, but the view is well worth it!<\/p>\n

*Pro Tip: Take the slow ferry from Athens to Santorini, departing at midnight, and spend more time in the cabin bed. Upon arrival, you’ll save lodging and daylight to fully explore!<\/p>\n
